Kyrgyz ornament was never decoration. Every motif says something: about plenty, about protection, about the way home. We collect those meanings into a database — with the Kyrgyz name, the source and the name of whoever confirmed it. And we publish only what we have verified.

A motif without context is just a line. Here is what stands behind it: how felt is made, how the yurt is built, what people believed and what of it is still alive.

A wall panel that a mother embroiders for her son's or daughter's wedding. The first thing a person sees when entering the house.

A house that can be assembled in an hour and disassembled in half an hour. The entire structure of the Kyrgyz ornament is the structure of its walls, dome, and floor.

Ak kalpak. The only piece of clothing that a Kyrgyz person wears in the field, at a celebration, and in parliament.

Felt bag for tableware, which was hung on the wall of a yurt. The first item in this culture designed as a bag.

Saddle. An item on which the craftsman spent more carving than on anything else in the house — because it was seen most often.

A three-stringed instrument made from a single piece of wood. It is used to perform epics and to teach a child how to listen.

A leather vessel for kumis, covered with embossed patterns. It was served to a guest — and the house was judged by it.

Three colors, which have a confirmed meaning in the sources. We do not attribute meaning to the others.
Meaning of geometry
The rhombus protects, the spiral moves, the circle closes. The form carries meaning before it is recognized as a horn or a bird.
Positive and negative
Two carpets with inverted colors are produced from one cut. Figure and background in Kyrgyz ornament are equal — this is both a technique and a concept.

Half the motifs still have no meaning
In the catalogues of Kyrgyz ornament most motifs carry only a name and a translation. The meaning lives in oral tradition and has to be checked with a bearer of that tradition. Such motifs sit in our database but do not reach the site or a product: signing a pattern with an invented meaning is worse than leaving it unsigned.
