Why exactly it

The wool of local fat-tailed sheep is coarse and uneven; it is unsuitable for fine yarn, but better than fine-wooled sheep for felting: the fiber scales interlock more firmly. What is considered a low grade in the textile industry is the exact raw material needed here.

Autumn and spring

Shearing happens twice a year, and the wool is different each time. Spring wool, grown over the winter, is longer and is used for top layers and patterns. Autumn wool is shorter and denser — it is used to make the base. The artisan distinguishes them by touch and does not mix them up: a canvas made from the wrong wool will felt unevenly.

What this means for the order

The natural color of wool is not white, but ranges from cream to dark brown, and it varies from batch to batch. This is a property of the material, not a defect. Products made from undyed wool in a single order will match, but products from different orders may differ in shade.
