How it works

Two felt cloths of different colors are cut simultaneously along the same contour. The cut-out figure from the first cloth is inserted into the hole of the second, and vice versa. Not a single piece of wool is discarded, resulting in a pair: where the pattern on the first carpet is red on white, on the second it is white on red.

Why this is more important than savings

The eye cannot decide what is the figure and what is the background here, and that is the point. The empty space between the motifs is not a "remainder," but a pattern in itself. This is what distinguishes Kyrgyz ornament from a pattern drawn over fabric, and what is usually lost when transferring an ornament to print: printing only knows the figure against the background.
